Muscle cars are all the rage. Even today, if you see one driving around, it’s cool. It’s cool to look at and it’s even cooler if you own one. Unfortunately, not all vehicles are equal. If you were a kid in the ’70s and your cooler, older next-door neighbor had a muscle car – it didn’t matter what kind it was. Well now that you are older and have more experience, you learned how awful it probably was compared to other cars of the time. We’re taking a look at 5 muscle cars that were extremely popular when they came out and why the owner could have done better.

#3: 1975 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

The 75 Chevy Camaro turns heads when you drive it down the road today. Now it might sound weird that we are trashing on one of the most popular muscle cars ever – but hear us out. The vehicle came out at the time of America’s disastrous oil embargo. 1975 was a time after muscle cars had their hey-day. The new Camaro had a 155 horsepower engine – which isn’t much. Also, the car was ugly. With the chrome front and rear bumpers jutting out like a sore thumb, it’s easy to see why this doesn’t stack up.

#2: 1974-76 Ford Torino

There were a lot of things going for Ford’s new line. Designed with the city of Torino, Italy, the car was expected to give a stylish and comfortable ride. Unfortunately, the era of awesome fastback muscle cars was on the decline. Instead, what we got was a grandpa car with a beefy engine. I don’t think anyone driving this would appear cool.

#1: Chevrolet El Camino SS 454

The El Camino walks a thin line. Is it a muscle car? Is it a pickup truck? It has a V8 engine, but its rear-wheel-drive and has a cab. WHAT IS THIS THING?!?! While El Camino is a personal taste, it didn’t stop the mass purchases during its time. The look might be a turn off for many, but under the hood, it was pretty impressive. For its time it was the most powerful pickup(?) on the market.
