On Friday 03/01, the United States Department of Energy established that they’re giving about $51.5 million for technological fuel research. It will emphasize trucks, off-road vehicles, and the fuels that power them. Thus, this funding is allocated to those conducting research on these specific topics.
The Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy deals with all gaseous fuel research. As a result, this department will directly deal with this research. Some outlets that they study include natural gas, hydrogen and biopower research. They also spend time with heavy-duty freight electrification, fuel cell technologies for heavy duty applications, energy-efficient off-road vehicles, and hydrogen infrastructure.
So, why is this research important? Because it directly affects the trucking industry. Since the trucking industry is constantly growing, cheaper and more efficient way of freight transport is valuable. With trucking technology solutions, we can improve energy collateral as well as increase affordability. Trucks transport most consumer goods. Thus, if trucking costs go down, the prices for consumer goods will decrease as well. The trucking industry greatly impacts our economy.
How is the funding divided?
This funding will go to five topics.
Firstly, $16 million goes to gaseous research and technology with mid-sized to heavy-duty vehicles. As a result, research for high-density gas storage and transport, energy waste, technological advances, and heavy-duty natural gas and hydrogen-fueled vehicles are a priority. After that, is battery electric heavy-duty freight trucks. The department devotes about $18 million to this. This includes all projects of technological advancements using batteries and electric driving systems.
Another focus is on hydrogen fueling technologies. This portion of researchers receive up to $6 million dollars. It consists of focusing on fast-fill hydrogen storage and fueling. The fourth topic’s focus is Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs) for medium to heavy-duty trucks. This will improve fuel cell durability. Lastly, about $5 million will be allocated to energy efficient off-road vehicles. Hopefully, this will increase technological development in fluid power systems, high-efficiency, and control concepts (both automated and connected).
If you are interested in a funding opportunity for a project related to this research, it is due by March 29. For more information or an application, visit the government grant website.
