What do pop music and bad drivers have in common? They both seem to be everywhere! Fortunately, there are ways you can make sure you’re not falling into bad driving habits while on the job. It’s also good to know how to spot the signs in yourself and others while on the road, so you can stay safe and keep others protected as well! Most truck drivers are responsible and knowledgeable on how to drive safely. Unfortunately, there are always a few bad apples in the bunch you need to be aware of. Keep on reading to pick up some tips and tricks that can help ensure you stay safe and secure on the job!

Distracted Driving

Thanks to an increasingly hectic lifestyle, and with so much technology so readily available, it’s easier than ever to get tempted by all kinds of distractions on the road. Maybe you’ve seen a fellow truck driver going through their text messages while driving, or maybe you yourself have felt the need to respond before your next pit stop. It’s definitely tempting — but it’s also unsafe for everyone on the road.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration does have a set of guidelines explaining what constitutes as distracted driving. Reaching for maps and adjusting the radio are notable examples. However, the most common cases seem to relate to texting and/or taking phone calls. Consider keeping your phone in the backseat so you don’t get distracted by it. If you see another trucker distracted while driving, do your best to steer clear of them.

Tailgating

Many truckers are feeling the pressure to meet tight deadlines, so they might resort to speeding and intimidating other drivers as a resort. No reputable company would ever condone this behavior, so you shouldn’t feel a need to do this. And if you’re being tailgated, be sure to stay the speed limit and don’t engage the other driver.

Highway Hypnosis

This condition occurs in truck drivers who “zone out” during long stretches of road with little concentration required. If you’ve ever felt like zoning out, you may not be getting enough sleep, so be sure to mention this concern to your employer.
