Truck drivers spend a great deal of time on the road and away from family. Some truckers are gone for days, weeks, or even months at a time. It doesn’t leave much room for anything else.
As an OTR driver, you sacrifice time away from the family. There are days you’ll go without seeing them, and many important events that will be missed. And this can take a toll on not only the truck driver, but the family as well.
However, there are ways to balance family life and the demands of a busy truck schedule that’ll make everyone happy.
Keep Yourself Entertained
The road can get lonely, especially if you’re in it for the long haul. There are times when you will miss your family so much that it may depress you. Before that happens, find things to do to. Crank up the music or read a book. Educate yourself and learn something new. It is sure to lighten the mood.
Stay Connected
Communicating with your family as much as you can is key. Whenever time permits, call home! Furthermore, creating a call schedule can also be helpful. Don’t worry if there are times when you can’t stick to it. The surprise, unplanned calls are sometimes even better!
Schedule Quality Time
And, finally, when you are home, make the most of it. Although rest and relaxation are critical during your days off, dedicate some of that time to the family as well. Just be sure not to overexert yourself as you will need your sleep too. Try to plan out some quality time in advance. It will help keep you on track.
Moreover, despite what others may think, it is possible to have a family and a great trucking career at the same time. But there is no perfect formula. Whatever works for you and your family. However, with proper planning and effort, it can be done.
